Behind your back is the world’s most sophisticated intelligence network, a remarkable system that relays information to millions of cells in your body. It coordinates, heals, controls, and maintains your body’s functions, while inspiring you spiritually, emotionally, and intellectually.

Your spinal column is probably the most important structure in your body. It is made of 24 movable vertebrae joined together by disks and cartilage, ligaments, tendons, muscles and blood and lymph vessels. The flexible vertebrae allow the spine to bend forward, backward, and sideways, enabling you to tie your shoes, swing a golf club, throw a baseball or dance and hold your baby. Most important of all, your spinal column is the structure that supports and protects your nervous system, which imparts vital nerve stimulation to your organs, glands, cells, and all parts of your body.

Therefore, the primary function of chiropractic is to attend to the well-being of your spinal column, and by so doing, promote the well-being of your entire person.

According to health educator Robert Cooper, “Posture is affected by, and affects, every aspect of our lives. Your state of nutrition, exercise, stress management, body fat control and mental development all depend in part, on your posture. With good posture, exercise is more enjoyable, digestion improves, the mind is clearer, senses sharper and problems seem more manageable.”

Posture is one of the most overlooked secrets to better health and performance at any age. Posture is the window to your state of health. Every one of us has been told to sit up straight or stand tall by our mother ‘s while growing up.

The reason is simple: Poor posture is controlled by our daily tasks, job positions, muscle tension and bony alignment.

In addressing posture your doctor is addressing an important aspect of your day to day life. They will be providing you with recommendations on ergonomics (how you body relates and interacts with its environment) and exercise. Being mindful of those suggestions and activities can make a big impact on your day to day life.

Pregnancy can be a time of joy and anticipation, yet for some the experience is colored by pain, discomfort and illness. This is often because pregnant women undergo many structural and hormonal changes that affect the spine, nerves, joints, ligaments, connective tissues, center of gravity and stability. The doctor of chiropractic can ensure that the spinal column, pelvis and related structures are balanced, moving easily and free of vertebral subluxations. When free of vertebral subluxation and fascial fixation, the mother-to-be experiences pregnancy at a greater level of comfort, health and vitality and can better handle the stress of childbirth.

Eggs: one egg has the same amount of protein as an ounce of meat.

Yogurt: one cup of yogurt offers 45% of the daily need for calcium.

Orange: one orange provides much of the vitamin C than you need for the entire day and is a good source for folic acid, fiber and potassium.

Oats: the number 1 source of cholesterol-lowering soluble fiber.

Kale: has more nutrients in greater amounts than most other vegetables.

One of the biggest threats to health is Complacency. If you want to live to 100, the best advice in the world won’t do you any good if you don’t stop and think about how your actions today will affect your life tomorrow. The 3 biggest obstacles to living 100 years or more are cigarette smoking, an inactive lifestyle and obesity. Here are some more tips on not killing yourself:

  1. Eat 30% less. With about 300,000 obesity related deaths annually in the U.S. alone, The Institute of Aging found that consuming 30% fewer calories daily appears to slow the aging process.
  2. Drink less. Harvard researchers found that men who consume 2-6 drinks per week had nearly half the death risk of men who consumed 2 or more drinks per day.
  3. Medicate less. According to the University of California, medication related deaths increased 250% from 1983-93. Researchers at the University of Maryland found that “you’re especially at risk if you take multiple medications, see more than one physician or have prescriptions filled at more than one pharmacy.” The Bottom Line: STRESS LESS. While stress is rarely listed as a cause of death, it is almost always an accomplice. Try reducing incoming data for one day each week. Declare one day as “no new information day”… No TV, no radio, no internet, no newspapers, no magazines……no kidding.
